We invite you to Join Kilitop and Safaris on this fantastic group Kilimanjaro Trek ascending Africa’s highest mountain. This is a combination of an 8-day trek on the Shira Route with 1 night at a luxury lodge just outside Arusha. On Mount Kilimanjaro, Shira Route is one of the least used initial ascent routes due to its remote location and high starting elevation, thus you have to start slow and easy. The many changes of scenery and stunning hike across the Shira Plateau make this trek truly special. The Shira Route includes spectacular hike along the northern circuit where opportunities to see some wild animals; possible elephant, buffalo, eland, and signs of many other animals. Due to the rugged terrain and the limited acclimatization time, fitness prior to attempting the climb plays a huge role in the enjoyment and success of this trek.

Day 01:ARRIVE ARUSHA,TANZANIA

You arrive At Kilimanjaro International Airport in the evening. After Airport formalities you will find a representative of Kilitop &Safaris outside custom are.Enjoy a private transfer to your hotel in Arusha where you will spend the night. Dinner is served at lodge after a comprehensive climb briefing.

Day 2 – MORUM BARRIER GATE (12,362 ft.) – SHIRA 1 CAMP (12,200 ft.):

You depart from your hotel in Arusha at around 7:30am and drive to Londorossi gate, a journey of about 4 hours in 4x 4 vehicle. On arrival, complete entry formalities and then continue up by car to Morum Barrier Gate (another hour to reach the trailhead). Upon arrival at trail-head, you will be provided with your packed lunch and thereafter commence your trek going through heather and moorland which lead to the first camp, (which is a descent) only about 1-2 hours of trekking. Enjoy the stunning view of Kibo from across the plateau.l Dinner and overnight at Shira 1 Camp

Day 3 – SHIRA 1 CAMP – SHIRA 2 CAMP (12,600 ft.)

After breakfast enjoy full day exploring the legendary Shira plateau; You then hike east towards Kibo’s glaciered peak, if you still have energy, there is an option to visit the ancient collapsed Shira cone, which is the oldest of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanoes. You finally arrive at your camp, Shira 2, located at an elevation of 12,600 ft. The iconic Shira, is one of the highest plateaus on earth, averaging 12,500 feet. Without the optional excursions, your hiking time about 3 hours. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 4 – SHIRA 2 CAMP – MOIR CAMP (13,800 ft.)

After you leave your camp in the morning, you will hike steadily upward through the heather and reach the barren high altitude desert, toward the “Shark’s Tooth”, to Moir Camp. The trekking time is approximately 2-3 hours, and offers your body a great opportunity to acclimatize to the altitude. Moir camp is an isolated and rarely used camp affording spectacular views over the Shira Plateau. Dinner and overnight at camp. (B, L, D)

Day 5 – MOIR CAMP – BARRANCO CAMP (12,950 ft.)

Your morning trek brings you out of the moorland and into the stark alpine desert, on a steep ridge off the main trail, and here you finally begin your venture on the Northern Circuit Route. Today’s trek can take about 5 – 7 hours. From the Pofu Campsite you will enjoy a magnificent view into Kenya’s wild lands to the north. (B, L, D)

Day 6 – POFU CAMP – RONGAI 3 CAVES CAMP (12,960 ft.)

You continue with your Kilimanjaro trek onward through valleys and over ridges through the alpine desert and moorland, continuing your circuit to the east, enjoying a vast mountain wilderness to yourselves. You finally arrive at the intersection with the Rongai Route after about 4-6 hours of trekking. Overnight at Rongai 3 Caves for the night. (B, L, D)

Day 7 – RONGAI 3 CAVES CAMP – OUTWARD BOUND CAMP (15,585 ft.)

Your trail now turns steadily uphill as you continue with your trek. You will experience colder temperature and the landscape will become more sparse as you near the Barafu Camp. The camp is set on a small, exposed flat area on a ridge, acting as a base camp from which you will make your summit attempt at midnight tonight. To reach Barafu Camp, you would have trekked for about is 4-5 hours. We recommend that you eat and drink as much as possible before retiring early to your tent for rest and sleep. (B, L, D)

DAY 8 – OUTWARD BOUND CAMP – UHURU PEAK (19,340 ft.) – MWEKA CAMP (10,200 ft.)

You will get a midnight wake-up call at 12:30 AM from your Kilimanjaro climb team. After quick tea/coffee, you begin your final ascent as you trek up the winding path of endless switchbacks. The trekking time from your camp to the rim of the crater (Gillman’s Point (18,750 ft./ 5,712 m) then to Uhuru Peak, is about 7 – 8 hours. This could be the toughest part of your cclimb with the slope being steep, with switchbacks, over loose rock and scree with some boulders as you near Gilman’s Point. The trail to the summit after Gilman’s Point at the edge of the crater, is less demanding, and is reached after a further 1½-2 hours along the snowy crater rim (depending on the season). After a short time at the summit, re-trace your steps back to Gilman’s Point, then summon your strength again for further descent to Mweka Camp for the night. (B, L, D)

DAY 9 – MWEKA CAMP – MWEKA GATE (6,000 ft.)/ARUSHA

Descend straight to the gate (2 – 3 hours), where you’ll have lunch and will be awarded climbing certificates. Private transfer back to Arusha, and drop at the hotel of your choice (hotel priced separately), or drop at JRO airport (B, L, D)
